Comment: Canyamel moves back up to 7th spot, offering a good set of consistent results and proving to be a popular venue on the north-east coast.
This 18 hole, par-73 course was created in 1988 by the golf architect José Gancedo.
The front 9 flows sympathetically with the natural landscape, and utilises existing features of the land, such as the stone hut in the middle of the 9th fairway, to good effect. The first nine holes are quite difficult, and the 5th hole offers a particularly excellent view of Menorca.
The second 9 is marginally weaker, and set in flatter land, but still offers some thoughtful challenges, and some of the natural features seen on the front 9, such as typical dry stone walls.
The spacious white clubhouse is impressive, smart and well designed. The reception is carefully stocked with clothes and equipment, and there is a superb driving range, hitting downhill off grass.
Good food and beer are served in the bar and restaurant or on the terrace which overlooks the 18th green, providing a great spot to enjoy the travails of others coping with this final, quirky par-3 with a triple "piano" undulation. (One of our customers made a hole-in-one here!)
We also shouldn't forget to mention the tortoises. Canyamel's logo is a tortoise, and in warm weather, or in the early mornings, it's not unusual to see a tortoise making its way leisurely across the fairways.
